Directo

From 50 windows to one

Client:
Directo, Estonia’s leading ERP
Roles:
#IA #visual_design #branding
Duration:
January 2020 – present

Problem

Directo is a powerful, cloud-native ERP and business management system that handles everything from financial accounting and logistics to payroll, manufacturing, and project management (and more). Thousands of companies rely on it, and many users spend their entire workdays conducting mission-critical workflows inside the app.

The only problem: the user interface was designed in 2000.

Everything, even the humble datepicker, opened in a separate browser window, and many users ended up with dozens of windows open by the end of the workday.

Solution

My key individual contributions include:

  • Creation of a scalable design system (also including markup and styling of the production code)
  • Creation of universal interaction patterns like saving and manipulating data, configuring layouts, relationship between “primary” and “secondary” information etc.
  • User-customisable and ultra-flexible layout templates for all types of views
  • Employee mobile app MyDirecto (also based on the same design system)
  • New visual identity (with Pamela Sume)
  • Implementation and documentation of design conventions specific to Directo
  • Deployment of Claude-assisted prototyping tool that uses real front-end components
  • The most important part of the job: converting a decades-old multi-window web app into a modern, endlessly customisable single-page app. This is still the core effort.
